The Adventures of 219 |
In Memory Of... Jeff Duft, Mr. Duft, ASM Duft, Committee Member Duft, Eagle Scout Project Coach Duft, and affectionately "The Rocketman". A passionate self-less leader, you will forever be missed. Thank you greatly for the skills, leadership, dedication, mentorship, care and friendship you provided to all. Forever a Family Man and a Scout! May the Great Scoutmaster of all Scouts be with us until we meet again.
It has been said that space is a deep dark frozen place of wonder, kinda like Big Lake, Alaska! While weather conditions were "ok", and lake conditions were fading fast you can't dampen these Scouts excitement for high speed, high altitudes, hot burgers and dogs, and even some inadvertent glorious destruction! If you look to the stars you just might see a missing nose cone, or a flaming rocket of doom. Special thanks to Jeff, Dave, and Wayne for the rocket expertise, and all the parents that pitched in to make this event a success.
What an honor to see these Scouts look their best! Even after a 7.+ earthquake everyone came together to make the celebration great. The buffet was also top notch!!
While our primary river adventure was derailed by a dab of flooding, we adapted and overcame. South Rolly Lake provided some canoeing adventure, fishing, outdoor skill training, cooking, camping, and enough adventure to entertain the most experienced scouts. How can you not love wild berry pancakes, grilled pike, and Mr. Duft's famous Sweet Heat Grilled Peaches and Cream!! Many learned that 25.5 matches and lots of toilet paper may not be enough to get a fire going in damp Alaska. SPECIAL thanks to Mr Eliassen for "almost literally" (not really) BUT definitely figuratively giving his life to the goal of training and confidence building. Who knew it was that hard to cast a rescue float to someone a mere 25 feet away!!
Who says you can't row a canoe underwater??? Not these scouts!! Serious fun was had all around. The weather couldn't have been better, and the vittles were definitely BEEFY (steaks all around). Now if Yogi bear hadn't visited so many times it would have been too easy! You can't pay for adventures like these.
On May 27, 2018 Troop 219 went to the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson’s cemetery to honor the fallen soldiers who have died in battle or from natural causes by placing one U.S. flag at each headstone. By the end of our time there we had placed 3000 out of 4527 flags; the remainder were placed by another troop and Cub Scout pack. In addition to the Scouts, there were four members from the U.S. Coast Guards there to help us pay tribute to those who had come before. Every time they placed a flag they would salute the headstone. As we were placing flags we saw three bald eagles flying overhead which was very symbolic due to their symbolism and inspirational meaning linked to this amazing nation.
